After 26 months of hiatus for WISITS, it is time to reactivate the travelogue with the first leisure travel to New York City for a week in April 2022.
Architect Micheal Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker's "Reflecting Absence" was the winning design entry out of 5,201submissions from 49 U.S. states and 63 nations.
New York City has some of the most iconic Art Deco buildings in the world. It is quite possibly the best city for Art Deco in the world. Here are three examples I have put together.
Bryant Park is a beloved, year-round New York City destination. Known as Manhattan's Town Square, the park is famous for its lush seasonal gardens, free activities, world-class restrooms (I checked it out), and al fresco dining.
The Morgan Library & Museum houses art in virtually every medium, including drawings, prints, and artifacts dating from 4000 B.C. to the 21st century. The library's holdings include a host of rare books and manuscripts: one of 23 copies of the original Declaration of Independence; Mozart's handwritten score of the Haffner Symphony; the collected works of Phillis Wheatley, the first known African American poet; the only extant manuscript of Milton's Paradise Lost; and Charles Dickens’s manuscript of A Christmas Carol.
On Fifth Avenue in New York, St. Patrick's Cathedral is the most enormous Gothic Roman Catholic Cathedral in the United States. The Cologne Cathedral influenced its design. Over five million people visited the cathedral each year.
One World Trade Center is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and the seventh tallest building globally. The elevator takes only 47 seconds to get to the Observatory on the 102nd floor, 387 metres above. The views are spectacular as attested by the photos I have stitched together.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection of ancient Egyptian art consists of approximately 26,000 objects of artistic, historical, and cultural importance, dating from the Paleolithic to the Roman period (ca. 300,000 B.C.–A.D. 4th century). I have only shown a few of my favourites.
The Met is also home to one of the world's most diverse and important collections of musical instruments. With more than 5,000 examples from six continents, it is unsurpassed in its scope and includes instruments from all cultures and eras.
Museum of Modern Art’s rich and varied collection offers a panoramic overview of modern and contemporary art, from the innovative European painting and sculpture of the1880s to today's film, design, and performance art. Considered by many to have the best collection of modern Western masterpieces in the world, MoMA's holdings include more than 150,000 individual pieces in addition to approximately 22,000 films and 4 million film stills.
I feature a selection of my favourites by each renowned artist.
For many visitors, New York City is a visual feast. You just have to look up and stunning images appear. Simply point your camera and capture these exquisite images.
